The Work of Terre des Hommes in HAITI<\/span><\/h1>\n

SUPPORT FOR CHILDREN IN HAITI.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Terre des Hommes has been present in Haiti since 2010<\/strong>, when we responded to the emergency following the terrible earthquake of that year, and since then we have never left. Even today, Haiti remains the third poorest country in the world<\/strong>, with 59%<\/strong> of the population living below the poverty line. The level of education is still extremely low, as only 57% of children<\/strong> enroll in primary school and 20%<\/strong> in secondary school.<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the ongoing projects?<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • We build and rebuild school buildings<\/strong> with anti-seismic criteria.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • We ensure children’s right to education<\/strong> and child protection centers.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n
  • We carry out projects to improve the conditions of young people<\/strong> and women<\/strong> detained to reintegrate them into society through constant engagement with the Direction de l’Administration P\u00e9nitentiaire (DAP).<\/span><\/li>\n
  • We assist in the deinstitutionalization of unaccompanied minors<\/strong> and collaborate with relevant authorities to identify suitable families<\/strong> for foster care. Additionally, we accompany minors<\/strong> by offering them psychosocial and economic support.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n
  • We protect minors who are victims of exploitation and abuse<\/strong> through psychosocial and sports activities in collaboration with FIFA and the Haitian Football Federation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    WHAT DO WE DO WITH SPONSORSHIP?<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

    In a neighborhood of the capital Port-au-Prince and in the south of the country, in Les Cayes, an area shaken by a severe and recent earthquake in August 2021, thanks<\/strong> to Sponsorship, we are helping several children to have their right to education guaranteed. Through Sponsorship, we can:<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    • Helping the most vulnerable families<\/strong> to cope with the fees of private schools, since public schools do not ensure either the opening or the regular presence of teachers.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Ensuring participation in preschool activities for children<\/strong> who, as an alternative, would have ended up living on the streets.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Making schools safe and rebuilding those destroyed<\/strong> by earthquakes.<\/li>\n
    • Expanding schools that offer both preschool and the entire primary cycle, in order to accommodate a higher number of students.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
