Il matrimonio \u00e8 stato reso possibile da una \u201cscappatoia\u201d nella legge della Florida, che <strong>non fissa un\u2019et\u00e0 minima per il matrimonio se la ragazza \u00e8 incinta<\/strong>. Il matrimonio di Sherry \u00e8 stato celebrato quasi cinquant\u2019anni fa, ma il problema esiste ancora e la donna (che oggi ha 58 anni) \u00e8 impegnata in prima linea per ottenere un cambiamento della legge e fissare l\u2019et\u00e0 minima per il matrimonio a 18 anni.<br \/>\n<strong>In Florida i ragazzi e le ragazze di 16 e 17 anni possono sposarsi se c\u2019\u00e8 il consenso da parte dei genitori<\/strong>. Ma se la ragazza \u00e8 incinta, non c\u2019\u00e8 un\u2019et\u00e0 minima per il matrimonio, sufficiente che il giudice approvi l\u2019unione. A denunciare la situazione \u00e8 l&#8217;associazione americana Human Rights Watch, che <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/EndChildMarriage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ha lanciato una petizione<\/a><\/strong> per chiedere al governo dello Stato di modificare la legge.<\/p>\n<h2>In Florida oltre 3mila matrimoni precoci in sei anni<\/h2>\n<p>I matrimoni precoci e forzati sono molto diffusi negli Stati Uniti (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/old.terredeshommes.it\/stati-uniti-spose-bambine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">come avevamo gi\u00e0 raccontato su questo blog<\/a><\/strong>) e in Florida tra il 2010 e il 2016 sono stati celebrati 3.161 matrimoni che hanno coinvolto un minore. Di questi, 72 avevano meno di 16 anni. In base alle stime di Human Rights Watch, <strong>tra il 2001 e il 2015 oltre 16mila minorenni si sono sposati prima di compiere i 18 anni<\/strong>. Nell\u201980% dei casi si tratta di ragazze costrette a sposare uomini pi\u00f9 anziani di loro.<\/p>\n<h2>New York mette al bando i matrimoni precoci<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI matrimoni precoci sono collegati ad alti tassi di dispersione scolastica, povert\u00e0, violenza domestica e disordini psichici\u201d, si legge sul sito di HRW. Lo scorso ottobre, anche a seguito delle pressioni di avvocati e attivisti per i diritti umani, <strong>una commissione del Senato della Florida ha approvato all\u2019unanimit\u00e0 un progetto di legge per mettere fine al matrimonio infantile nello Stato<\/strong>. La Florida potrebbe quindi a breve seguire l&#8217;esempio dello Stato di New York. Nel giugno 2017, il governatore Andrew Cuomo, ha firmato una legge che porta l\u2019et\u00e0 minima per il matrimonio a 18 anni, senza alcuna eccezione.<br \/>\n\u201cI matrimoni precoci sono uno sporco segreto negli Stati Uniti e altri Stati dovrebbero seguire l\u2019esempio di New York &#8211;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2017\/06\/20\/us-new-york-governor-signs-anti-child-marriage-law\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ha commentato Heather Barr<\/a><\/strong>, ricercatrice di HRW-.
