Education: A right for all children.
Despite the progress made in recent decades, there are still too many children and adolescents excluded from school.
Are not enrolled in the primary cycle
Do not attend lower secondary school
Do not attend upper secondary schools even though they are of school age
The reasons are multiple: wars, discriminations, poverty, disabilities, distance from school, poor quality of teaching.
However, the right to education is fundamental for the future of every child, wherever they are born, and for the progress of their community. Terre des Hommes places education at the core of its interventions, working to ensure this right is protected for all girls and boys, in any context.
Access to education without exclusions
In our projects, we aim to overcome all obstacles that make access to education difficult. From paying school fees to providing stationery, transportation with school buses, removing architectural barriers, to renovating school premises and toilets, so that all girls and boys can study peacefully and profitably.
Special attention is devoted to disabled or marginalized children due to gender, ethnicity, or ongoing conflicts.
Wars, natural disasters, migrations: for children experiencing these events, one of the biggest traumas is no longer being able to go to school. Terre des Hommes immediately activates in emergency contexts by setting up protected spaces for children where educational activities, even informal ones, take place, bringing back a sense of normalcy that helps restore peace of mind to the youngest ones.
Some projects are dedicated to refugee children due to conflicts, offering school recovery services and foreign language teaching aimed at integrating them into the school system of the host country.
For quality education
In the world, 617 million children and adolescents do not reach the minimum levels of proficiency in reading and mathematics, even though one-third of them go to school. Poor performance is often seen by parents as a reason for dropping out of school, leading them to let their children work or marry off their daughters when they are still minors.
For this reason, Terre des Hommes focuses on teacher training and the provision of teaching tools and materials to improve the quality of education and strengthen the school system in fragile countries. Additionally, it promotes preschool education through the creation of nurseries and specific educational services to better prepare young children for school entry.
