The work of Terre des Hommes in Ivory Coast
SUPPORT FOR CHILDREN AND WOMEN IN IVORY COAST
In Ivory Coast, we started working here in 1997 in a context heavily characterized by diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV. Malnutrition is still widespread, and infant and maternal mortality rates remain very high. It is estimated that more than one in ten children die before reaching the age of 5. Less than half of the population can read and write, and many girls and boys do not attend primary school.
What does our intervention involve?
- We carry out vaccination and health prevention programs promoted by local authorities.
- We conduct campaigns for the issuance of birth certificates, necessary to access essential services.
- Forniamo sostegno alimentare, in particolare alle famiglie bisognose che vivono nelle zone rurali del paese.
- We provide food support, particularly to needy families living in rural areas of the country.
- We distribute school kits annually to ensure school attendance.
WHAT DO WE DO WITH CHILD SPONSORSHIP?
Thanks to Child Sponsorship, we carry out projects for boys and girls in the Grand Bassam district, particularly in the towns of Samo and Allohoré, with the aim of improving their living conditions.
- During the summer periods, at the end of the school year, regular socio-recreational activities are provided to children to prevent them from working in the fields and the high risk of child exploitation.
- We offer Ivorian children basic education and school supplies, including books and school kits comprising pens, pencils, markers, and notebooks, and for those in need, food support.
- We promote vocational training activities, particularly for girls.
